Two very good reasons to use this icon

1. I turned in my final portfolio and gave my final presentation, and Qualitative Methods is OVER. FOREVER.

2. I got all 195 countries. I am ridiculously proud of myself.

o.0 that map is missing a bunch of countries

[identity profile] jedusor.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? Like what? It says it's the nations recognized by the UN plus three other widely recognized nations.

oh, that explains it. It's missing some of the newer ones in Africa, but that continent goes through a political rearrangement every week anyway.

+ trinidad and tobago

Algeria, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Dominica, Egypt, France, The Gambia.
Hungary, Iran, Japan, Kazakstan, Libya, and Mongolia.
Norway, Oman, Pakistan.
Russia, Qatar, Suriname.
Turkey, Uruguay, Vietnam.
West Xylophone, Yemen, Zim-bab-we!

Erm, that would be Qatar then Russia.

I have had that song in my head for the past two days.

Congratulations to you!

But re: the countries website: a whole-hearted "meh." After rejecting "united kingdom", "great britain", and "england", it took the first two letters of "ukraine" as "uk". Wholly underwhelming.

[identity profile] qaqaq.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
It does take "United Kingdom". You must have made a typo. (And it shouldn't take "Great Britain" or "England", since those aren't the name of the country.)

[identity profile] thatwesguy.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed; confirmed. I must have made a typo. (Rest assured that I only tried "England" and "Great Britain" on the basis that if the damn thing couldn't spell United Kingdom, it might also be confused about the name of the country. ;-) )

Congrats! I did it just now and got 186 out of 195 ... but most of them were ones I wouldn't have missed if I had been using the individual continent maps. On this map, it's just impossible to see what you haven't covered yet. (I mean ... Greece? Venezuela? Obviously I'd have gotten those, I just couldn't see that they hadn't been covered yet.) So I guess that makes it even more impressive, since you not only have to name the countries, you have to do it getting a very limited amount of feedback about which ones remain to be gotten.

[identity profile] jedusor.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the trick. I was getting all of them on the continent quizzes a while before I got all of them on the full map because of the feedback thing.

You did awesome on that countries thing! I only got 114 in 15 minutes. Lots of little islands I missed, and I'm still weak on Africa.

*high fives you*

Note that I was doing this obsessively for a day and a half before I managed it, in large part because I was so terrible at it when I started that I decided I needed to improve. So it's more a feat of rote memorization than of actual knowledge. :P

I haven't tried the countries, but I, too, am done with Qualitative Methods forever.
