~"Something I Can Never Have" by Nine Inch Nails
I just ran across a woman selling jewelry in the campus cafeteria. Apparently you can do that if you're sponsored by a Penn Valley club and give them 10-15% of your earnings. I excitedly offered to collaborate with her, helping her make the jewelry, and she suggested I gather materials this summer and start on my own in the fall. Which is an excellent idea, and I'd love to do it.
Know what would have really made sense? I know this girl called Mollie in the homeschool group. She used to be a friend of mine, and she inherited a bunch of jewelry-making stuff, including a billion beads, from (I think) her grandmother. And she makes some really cool stuff; I'm actually wearing a necklace she made for me for my last birthday. But she doesn't have a place to sell the stuff she makes. What would have made a lot of sense would be if I talked to the people at the Advocates for Better Government group, to which I belong, gotten them to sponsor me, and then worked with Mollie to make and sell jewelry. That way, between us, we'd have the merchandise and the means to sell it. But? Mollie's mom is one of the people who thinks I'm a bloodthirsty child molester. Last time I saw Mollie, she wouldn't even make eye contact.
*sigh*
I might be able to do it anyway, though. Mom has some materials, and I can get more. The lady, Roxy, gave me some tips. Mom can help me learn the basics of beading (she used to do it a lot) and the rest is just creativity and hard work. I really hope this works out, because the money would be really helpful, and I really enjoy making things.

Date: 2005-04-14 12:46 pm (UTC)(It occurs to me that i have no idea what you do with your time. I can't see a way to sell icons, and i think my sense that your family has quilts comes entirely from Lorraine, but what about tye-died things, friendship bracelet type stuff, drawings??)
As a word of warning - i find that my crafts projects cost a lot in supplies, so you may not be able to net as much money as you think. Having professional looking products would help, i think. Perhaps tailoring your products to the school could help, too. You know - make things in school colors, or things that are meant for an event that you know will be happening.
Good luck!!

Date: 2005-04-14 07:40 pm (UTC)Haha, your icon reminds me of something. At Blair's sweet sixteen party that I went to in New York a couple of weeks ago, they played that song about Barbies (you know, I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie wo-o-orld...) and I crawled under a table, curled up with my hands over my ears and muttered "happy thoughts happy thoughts happy thoughts happy thoughts" until it was finished.

Date: 2005-04-14 07:58 pm (UTC)I wish I did, but no. I have made a couple of quilts, but I'm not good enough at it to sell them. I do have a lot of fabric; maybe I could make pillows or something? I dunno.

The main reason I'm considering this is that my mom already has a lot of supplies. She's been too busy to do any beading in the past few years, and they've just been gathering dust.
Good luck!!
Thanks! We're looking forward to seeing you Saturday!
