The Safe, Sane, Consensual vs. Risk-Aware Consensual Kink debate kind of applies to politics, if you think about the underlying values behind the semantics. Theoretically, there's the SSC school of thought, which advocates an ideal regulatory environment but can't seem to settle on realistic operational definitions for those regulations, and then there's the RACK approach, which places both power and responsibility on the individual. But in practice, most people basically just want fairness and personal satisfaction, and case by case, we're all trying to nudge the rules closer to letting us have them.

Everybody's been crowing about Vermont all day, but did you guys see this? It's not as good as actually legalizing gay marriage, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

Goddammit, California. :/

Jack Black as Jesus is just about the best thing ever. And "Abomination! Obama-nation!" made me giggle.

As I understand it, the core idea of a conservative political ideology is "keep the government out of our lives." If that's the case, why are Republicans in favor of legislating things like abortion and drugs?

This is an honest question, not a jab at the right, and I hope the comments will stay respectful.

I saw Ralph Nader speak a few hours ago. He's doing some stunt, trying to set a Guinness World Record for the most political speeches in one day or something. (And he told us, with a straight face, that he's doing it in an effort to get people to take him seriously.) I was right up front, so I got to dodge the spit flecks while he yelled about corporations and how Barack Obama is the Antichrist. I did like what he said about marijuana legalization--that even if addiction is a problem, it's a health problem like nicotine addiction, not a criminal problem. And he ended with the word "bullshit." Most of it was geared very well toward college students, but he screwed himself over by demonizing Obama.

It was interesting, anyway. Worth waiting the 45 minutes he was late.

For me the most moving moment came when the family in front of me, comprising probably 4 generations of voters (including an 18 year old girl voting for her first time and a 90-something hunched-over grandmother), got their turn to vote. When the old woman left the voting booth she made it about halfway to the door before collapsing in a nearby chair, where she began weeping uncontrollably. When we rushed over to help we realized that she wasn't in trouble at all but she had not truly believed, until she left the booth, that she would ever live long enough to cast a vote for an African-American for president. --here

Also, Apple is donating a hundred thousand dollars to the No On 8 campaign in California. Go, Apple! I donated too, a little less than that--the first time I've ever given money to anything political, I think, unless you count the HRC membership I bought to shut Richard up. But this is a really, really important proposition to overturn, and I can't vote against it because I'm voting in Missouri.

Now, I don't really understand the full political implications of this Russia-Georgia conflict. I don't think anyone does. But it seems clear to me that it's important, and that US missile base in Poland worries me, so I've been following the situation pretty closely. It looks like Condoleezza Rice has been jetting all over the place--meeting with Sarkozy in France, Saakashvili in Georgia, and now she's off to Brussels to chat with folks from NATO and the EU.

Guess where Bush is?

Yep. His Texas ranch.

Oh, but he didn't leave until yesterday. He was going to go on Thursday. He postponed his trip a whole day, just to be sure WWIII wouldn't ruin his vacation. Such sacrifice!

As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

"There's a pattern emerging here," she said.

"I'm with Harry Truman on this — if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen," [Hillary Clinton] told voters while campaigning in Pennsylvania. "Just speaking for myself, I am very comfortable in the kitchen." -this Yahoo! News article

From [livejournal.com profile] shoutingboy, a video that ought to get Obama a few votes:

I JUST REALIZED I'LL BE OLD ENOUGH TO VOTE IN THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

Pardon my capslock. I'm rather excited about this.

Item 1: Allen has conceded, and the Dems have the Senate. Woo HOO!

Item 2: I just spent over $50 on two Christmas gifts. They're totally worth it, though. This is the first time in, um, ever that I've found a really good present for Bill (seriously, he's gonna love it), and Link's is adorable- thanks for the tip, [livejournal.com profile] shoutingboy.
jedusor: (you win)
McCaskill: YES.
Stem cell research: YES.
Minimum wage raise: YES.
Light rail: YES.

This election has seriously changed my attitude toward this state. I think, for the first time in the three years since we moved, I am proud to live here.
