Anybody know of any good, preferably classic and/or well-known, movies that center around the concept of independence (personal independence, not the red-white-and-blue kind)?

Now, Voyager springs to mind.

That's a tough question. I can't think of any that center around the concept, but here's a list of a few that have superlatively independent characters:

Harold and Maude
Welcome to the Dollhouse
The Breakfast Club
Brazil
Mermaids
Never Cry Wolf

Hmm
Defintely "The Dead poets society" and "Real Women have curves"
and I think you could put the following in that category too, who knows?:

SLC Punk
Rebel without a cause
Roman Holiday
The Goonies
Ed Wood
