Hokaj, catching up...
Aug. 24th, 2005 11:23 amThis is the first time I've had a chance to be on the computer for more than ten minutes since Monday, and I have an hour and a half, so I'll take the opportunity for a rundown of what's happened since Sunday.
The party went well- I'll upload pics next time I get a chance to use Mom's laptop (pics won't upload on the white laptop, which is what I usually use, and Bill's ban from the G5 for Clay's babywrangling slipup is still upon me). Scott, Rain, Dan, Brandon, and Kat showed up. We ate food, watched Foamy, roughhoused (mainly Rain and Dan), and chatted. Then Kat left and Mia showed up, and we all piled into Brandon's car to go to Westport. We ate dinner at the Jerusalem Cafe while telling a multitude of jokes, went to Freaks to check out nose-piercing options for Rain and look at jewelry, then went back to my house and soaked in the hot tub for a while. After everyone else left, Rain and I had an hour-long discussion about sex and abortion, which was good bonding time, then her mom picked her up.
Monday... what happened Monday? Oh, Mom got her wisdom teeth out and I spent a total of about nine hours watching the baby. She was all drugged up, which was funny. (Bill: "Prince Valium came and swept her onto his white horse." Mom: *in a slurry voice* "...whee...") Then I went to writing group, to which only two other people came that day. Usually we have at least six or seven. We came up with a name for the group (Recrudescence) and did a character development exercise I found on the web. Four people called me that night (Scott, Bronte and Mia to find out what was going on the next day, Ben because I'd left a message earlier asking where Amsterdam was) so I felt all popular and stuff. I hadn't seen Ben since April, and had only talked to him on IM two or three times since then, so we had a conversation until Lincoln decided to screech his head off until I let him play with the telephone.
Tuesday, yesterday, was the first day of classes. I got up at eight-thirty, groggily noted that it would probably have been a good idea to go to bed before one AM, grabbed a bagel and trotted my hiney onto the bus. Algebra came first. My teacher has a strong Middle Eastern accent and is thus a little hard to understand, but I think I'll get used to it. He's pretty cool, though- when I asked if he bumped up grades if he saw that the student was honestly trying, he sketched out a diagram on the board of the process in such circumstances, beginning with a student's sad face and ending with a happy face, which was amusing. English- eh, it won't be a problem, aside from biting my tongue about politics and religion. Apparently we're going to be analyzing and discussing persuasive essays on those topics, and she has a no-argument policy in the classroom. The research paper should be fun, though- we're supposed to pick "an event, experience, discovery, or philosophical or political idea that has had, is presently having, or will have an influence on American culture and/or values." It took me about five seconds to pick my topic (video games).
Then I went down to the Student Activities Office to try to figure out when the meetings are. Turned out nobody knew, including the people organizing them, so I went up to the library and spent a nice half hour reading a book from the one-dollar table called "The Psychology of Twinship," which I ended up buying. I heard a woman with an accent that sounded like the armadillo from "Creature Comforts" (not an insult- it's a very gentle British accent) talking about the French class, so I said hi to her. We sat next to each other in the class and teamed up when the teacher, Madam Brandt (who I like a lot, even though she kept accidentally lapsing into Spanish), said we needed partners. I think she'll be my note-taker if I have to miss a class. French class itself was awesome, although it's clear that it's going to be hard. Hey, I like a challenge.
After class let out, I took the Max to 45th and walked to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to meet Scott, Mia, Liz, and Kat. Kat's mom came too, and was actually pretty damn cool, for a strict, relatively conservative Christian mom. She said I have a gentle way of talking, which is news to me. Anyway, the museum was cool, apart from that one painting of the horse. *shivers* I did not like that painting. Liz gave Scott a ride back to his hotel, which was pretty much goodbye for me, because today is his day with his mom, and they're leaving early tomorrow. Liz, Mia and I went to Westport, and saw two people (a man and a woman, both young), having a physical fight in a car. The car rolled forward over the grass belt and onto the sidewalk, and the woman bent over so I couldn't see her head. They were both yelling and we weren't sure if she was hurt, so Mia called 911. If it had just been me, or if I'd been with a guy friend, I might have intervened, but I didn't want to put Mia and Liz in danger. We waited for a while for the officer the operator said she'd send to show up, but no one came, and when we went back to look, the car was gone.
A little shaken but knowing there was nothing else we could do, we went to ATC and looked at clothes until it was almost five. Liz drove me to my YPS meeting at Penn Valley. (Yay Liz!) We spent the first half hour or so of the meeting talking about event logistics, then headed to the computer lab to blast our 125-page-per-week paper allowances to pieces by printing hundreds of letters and surveys to send to schools, political groups, and politicians in the KC area. After that, I tested my Googling skills by finding addresses for mayors and US representatives in the area. I used Excel for the first time, and didn't bungle things up too badly. It was past 8:30 when Stephanie drove me home, and nearly nine by the time I realized I hadn't eaten a thing since the bagel that morning and had a sandwich. I was supposed to watch this 7-minute French video online three times last night, doing other things in between each viewing, but I only got through two before giving up and relinquishing consciousness.
Today, after algebra, I braved the bookstore line to find out what happened to the books we ordered last week, because Madam Brandt told us yesterday that we had to have them by tomorrow. The bookstore lady, when I told her this, rolled her eyes and said that Brandt had put in the order just before closing on Friday, so she hadn't had a chance to ship them yet. Then she proceeded to take me down to the mail room and hand me the box with my books in it. I thanked her profusely, carted the box to the Student Activities Office for temporary storage (it's awfully nice to have a place to dump stuff I don't want to carry around without having to pay $15 for a locker) and came up to the computer lab, where I am now.
Anyone coming to chess club at the library tonight? If you don't know what I'm talking about, but you like chess, come join us. It's at 6:00 in the large meeting room, ask at the front desk if you don't know where that is. Bring three bucks to contribute to the pizza fund if you want pizza.
EDIT: WTF is up with QC? "The page you are looking for is currently unavailable"? *goes on a rampage* I WANT MY QC DAMMIT!
