A quick rant on "tolerance"
May. 17th, 2005 01:02 pmI don't like it when people group the words "prejudice" and "intolerance" together when referring to bigotry, especially racial and sexual bigotry. I don't like "promoting tolerance" among a community. Tolerance is when you put up with something you disapprove of and/or don't like. Of course, tolerance is better than actively putting down diversity, but we shouldn't (IMO) be using it to describe the attitude we're going for in the long term. When people "tolerate" something, they will eventually get tired of it and stop tolerating it, which leads to division of the population (i.e. gay marriage) and war (i.e. the Civil War). I don't want tolerance. I want openmindedness, acceptance, encouragement and approval.
Just had to get that out of my system.
