So, my aunt is flying me out to New York from August 11th to August 21st to check out colleges. It looks like we'll be taking two weekend trips while I'm there: one to upstate New York, and one to Massachussetts. Here are the colleges that are on my list right now:

Amherst
Brandeis
Boston University
Boston College
Colgate
Columbia
Cornell
Hamilton
Harvard
Pace
Syracuse
Tufts
Vassar
Williams
Yale

Obviously, I'm not going to be able to visit all of these in a week and a half. Right now, I'm looking at college websites, College Board and the Princeton Review lists to decide which I want to see the most. Comments are welcome- which colleges should I definitely see? Which should I not bother with? Which aren't on my list but should be?

I'm leaving early tomorrow for San Antonio, and I'll be there until Monday night. I don't know how much internet access I'll have. Oh, and Craig gave me an A despite the fact that I contributed a total of nothing to the last issue. Yay!

EDIT: Also! Spamalot! SQUEE! *dances*

My brothers and dad will be back before the 11th. I'll ask them about this list when they return.

You've got good taste.

I'm going to Brandeis! :D
I won't be there then. But yeah. :P

Hmmm. All the Ivy-leagues are almost impossible to get in to, but go for it anyways --- just don't count on anything. Only one person from my entire school got in an Ivy-league -- she got in Cornell --- and that was the first person to in several years. Our valedictorian got rejected from Harvard, Yale etc; I got rejected from Columbia & Harvard; etc.

But if you're going to put Ivy-league schools on your list, at-least check out Brown. I absolutely loved Brown.

Good luck with it though. I'm excited to see what you choose. :)

I agree with this - Brown seems more like [livejournal.com profile] jedusor's type of place than Cornell, Harvard, or Yale.

off hand, syracuse is pretty big, and pretty far away. It may be an easy one to cut. Will think on it for a while about the rest.

My brother goes to Yale. He likes the university but HATES HATES HATES living in that area. Frankly I think he's a little spoiled, but then I spent my college years living in Hyde Park. It is kind of New England ghetto though.

You've talked to [livejournal.com profile] lunacow and [livejournal.com profile] derfnet about Brown already, right?

Boston seems very, very cool, although that is not necessarily enough reason to go somewhere.

Tufts has good engineering, too.
I don't know about psych so much.

New Haven is... well, its New Haven. Its a bit gritty. I like Yale itself, though. Columbia rocks.

still thinking.

How many of those colleges have a journalism program. UMKC sure doesn't.

Cambridge!

(And I don't mean the Massachusetts one.)

Coach went to Vassar; En went to Columbia--I think they each enjoyed themselves. My sweetie Jon went to Vassar and had a good education, and I'm sure would be happy to talk to you about it. I agree that of the Ivies, Brown is the one screaming "JULIA!" at the top of its lungs.

Minou is at Williams right now, and G Natural went there; I hear good things about it, and they have an awesome twice-yearly trivia competition. It's also in a beautiful part of Massachusetts, although pretty far from everything.

I told you what I thought about Yale, which seems to be echoed by other folks here; you might ask Cazique for a positive opinion, though--I know he enjoyed his years there.

You might get info from NYU, since you'll already be in NYC. It's a great school, and located right in the heart of Manhattan. I'm going to be applying there for grad school (as well as CUNY and probably Columbia).

We'll be delighted to see you when you're up here! And it was wonderful to see you at con.

Cornell was good to extra-young freshmen when I was there. I skipped a grade, but the guy downstairs from me was 2 years younger than I was. It is a very big school with a lot of small communities, and the trick to making it is to find some communities to belong to where you help each other get through.

Even though my home life sucked, I was intensely homesick for the first 3 months while getting adjusted, but after that, was never homesick at all.

1979-83 the food was much better there than it is now. I don't know whether the Risley dorm for artsy students is still there; I think you would like it a lot, or would have, anyway, the way it was then.

Wait, aren't you going to UMKC? Why would you go to a place without a journalism program if you want to major in journalism?

You're looking at Harvard; is Cambridge, UK actually more expensive?
