The salad dressing I made (with Mom's direction), Martinelli's sparkling cider, Tofurky, vegan gravy, Martinelli's sparkling lemonade, vegan mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, salad with edible flowers, green beans with toasted almonds, sweet potatoes in a maple and pecan sauce. Cordell said the edible flowers in the salad made him think of "that Chinese way of cooking a duck with the head on," and there was an argument as to whether Asian dressing was appropriate for a Thanksgiving dinner. I won; Asians can be grateful, too!

The vegan stuffing and the butternut squash soup.

Non-vegan stuffing, non-vegan mashed potatoes, non-vegan gravy, turkey, rolls, and German Reisling white wine. Link stuck his nose up at everything and demanded yogurt and cereal. The turkey cost over fifty dollars, which made me practically choke on a sweet potato when Mom mentioned it. (Bill sourly said that he thought she could have found a more expensive one by looking for the Perrier-fed breeds.)

Vegan pumpkin pie in the back, non-vegan in the front. You can see part of the pre-meal snacks in this picture: cheese and crackers, spicy candied pecans, and several different kinds of olives.

The "things we're grateful for" list. Roughly in order from left to right, with explanations where necessary:
A full pantry
My four healthy, brilliant, beautiful children
American Cancer Society (they gave Bill a fellowship)
Student Activities (for the grant that's paying my tuition this semester and possibly next)
War Against Terror: The Board Game (yeah, I'm a dork)
Crossword puzzles (mhmm, definitely a dork)
J+V Stowers (the people who founded Stowers, giving Bill his job)
The best gene to study ever
Karen Moore (who hired me despite the hoops she had to jump through about my age)
"Boob!" (Link's thought- note the dots in the Os)
Candles (of which we had none)
KCATA (Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, without which I would have no way to get around the city)
Garlic-stuffed olives
Material Possessions! (Cordell being a smart-ass)
More than three colors (Cordell being a smart-ass again, about the markers Mom left by the board)
My sexy, mad genius husband
Road trips
Missouri voters
LiveJournal (yep, still a dork)
"Planet" (no clue) (EDIT: This was apparently "Plane!"- another Link)
The antibody against Ald (more of Bill's gene stuff)
Baby kisses
Pixar
Flannel sheets
Mom
My GPA (dork, dork, dork)

After dinner and before pie, we went to Stowers to watch the Plaza lighting from the sixth floor. There were fireworks and something like nine helicopters circling, both of which made Link very happy. (The elevators and the sight of the moon also excited him. It was a busy half hour for a two-year-old.)

Yum, this looks so good! I also had butternut squash soup, and just wrote the hostess to get the recipe.

That's a really lovely, funny list of things to be thankful for -- I loved reading it.

I'll be doing a littel food-blogging myself later, but you might want to AVERT YOUR EYES -- we had a meal of wild animal-fatty excess, and are all surely about to go to hell and/or die of heart attacks.

Last year, though, FYI, we made an enormous number of things vegan, as we had a vegetarian and a vegan at dinner, and that was a wonderful meal, too. Truly I am a vegan groupie!

the "boob!" and "plane!" (not "planet") were my translation of Lincoln's scribblings (ie, things he was thankful for).

thanks for all your help in the kitchen! love you!
