Mooninite update. In short: the people accused of planting the Boston light boards are only answering questions about 1970s hairstyles, the boards are being sold on eBay for hundreds of dollars, Boston has no sense of humor whatsoever, and the Portland police department is leaving up their Mooninites as long as they're not on municipal property.

I want a Mooninite light board.

I think it's rather unfair to say Boston has no sense of humor whatsoever. Those flights took off from Boston, so we're all jumpy when a box with wires and other electronic looking paraphenalia is found stuck to the underside of a bridge. Did Boston overreact? Sure, but at the same time TNT didn't get in touch with anyone rapidly, and Boston spent a LOT of money when we're already strapped for cash. There's not a lot to laugh about in that situation. It was stupid on every angle - the marketers down to the BPD.

Yet in NY, where there is a gaping hole in the middle of the city (metaphorically) and nearly 4,000 people lost their lives, no one freaked out.

Hmmmmm......

That was quite a lot different. The thing in Boston was a marketing campaign, and the now we're dealing with is post-911. Sometimes it means that people jump to conclusions. I'm certainly not saying Boston is blameless on this one - the level of freaking out was ridiculous, but I don't think it was surprising that small black boxes with wires attached to bridges & buildings were interpreted as being bombs.

The marketing campaign was in New York also. And Chicago, Atlanta, Portland, LA and other places.

I saw the boxes and they could be mistaken for bombs, and the placing of SOME was stupid. But after blowing up the first, realizing they were not bombs, the over reaction continued for hours.

When I said that Boston has no sense of humor, I meant to the part of the article that quoted Boston officials on "unconscionable" stunts and "corporate greed" and how "appalling" it was. Referring to a few officials as "Boston" was a bit of a gross generalization, and I'm sorry for not making my meaning clear.
