Bill, my stepdad, got sick a week or two after I did (probably from being exposed to me) and he's still under the weather.

I heard him hocking up a hunk of phlegm and said, "Oh, that's pleasant."

"Just about typical of everything you bring into my life," he answered.

...yeah. That one hurt. A lot.

oh, jules. i'm so sorry to hear this. we're all still feeling crappy, and it's too easy to lash out at those nearest to us. i certainly haven't been a paragon of polite behavior lately. this flu has been a bitch all around (i heard sailor went to the ER last night for the earache part). christina and kelly just came down with it this morning. we're all sick of being sick, and he's mad about missing the big lab meeting, but still... too mean.

i wish i could smooth things over between you two, especially since you're about to be gone for a week... we all wish we could go to CA too (and the Equinox party! WHAAAAAA!). well, i guess the point is that he's hurting about six different ways now too. i guess he knows he went over the line... he sounds like he feels bad about it. maybe just cut him a little slack and give him some space to offer an apology, instead of escalating? just an idea...

I suspect the meaning of "escalating" in this case might have been "telling dozens of people". Might be a generational thing. [Wan smile.]

I know I shouldn't say this, given that you were obviously genuinely hurt, which makes the remark automatically uncalled-for, but-- well-- it *is* a pretty funny line.
