I can't believe this is even debatable. I can't believe that in a society we consider civilized, I have to actually present a structured argument against cutting off pieces of babies when they're born.
I wasn't talking about respect for the practice, I was talking about respect for people. You must have known there were people on your friendslist who felt differently than you do, and yet you posted this—out of the blue, for that matter—in a singularly aggressive and argumentative manner. That, and the general tenor of some of the responses to hannahrorlove above, show a distinct lack of respect for people who practice circumcision.
Or did you in fact mean that you have no respect for the people who perform, or would perform, circumcision?
I don't think respect is all-or-nothing. I can have respect for a person and at the same time have no respect for their views on a particular topic. I have a friend who's said some things about the role of women in relationships that I find horrifically offensive, and my reactions to him expressing those views are not at all respectful, but I value his thoughts on other matters. In the case of circumcision, I think the infants involved are the ones who aren't getting any respect.
