I just got a letter from the dean saying I've made First Honors on the dean's list because of my 3.93 GPA. This is different from the honors I've already got in that I had to apply for the psych honors program, and that was based on my personal statement and recommendation from a sponsor; this honors is pure grades.

It looks like Clark isn't taking my Penn Valley GPA into account at all. It's not even listed in my student records. I wonder whether I'll have to submit transcripts from PV and SCC as well as Clark when I apply to grad school. It would be nice if I didn't, especially if I can keep my Clark GPA up.

The letter also informed me that my hometown newspaper will be notified. I'm kind of curious as to what they think that is. The hometown they've got for me is Penngrove, which is tiny and doesn't even have a newspaper as far as I'm aware.

Yes, when you apply to grad school, you will have to submit official transcripts from every college you've attended. However, grad schools will be particularly interested in your work at Clark.

When I applied to grad school, no one seemed to care much about my older grades.

Ditto this. My understanding is that grades improving from a rough spot is often more favorably looked upon than straight A's from the get go. It shows that you recovered from a problem and figured out how to be effective rather than just being fortunate and getting it right off the bat.

Well, my GPA has never been bad, but I got a C and a couple of Bs during my years at PV. I did fail one course because I had no concept of dropping a class, but I retook it to make it up in my GPA, and I'm hoping they'll realize I was thirteen when they see it on my transcript. (I'll probably post to my grad school filter about the age thing at some point--I'll be eighteen when I apply to grad school and nineteen when I start, and I'm not sure whether to emphasize that or play it down in applications.)

Er, make that nineteen when I apply and twenty when I start. That class I failed was a math class, in case it wasn't obvious. :)

I am surprised you would consider emphasizing the age thing. They are most interested in whether you can do the work, so focus on convincing them of that.

If there's one thing I learned when I was applying to undergrad schools, it's that admissions are a crapshoot. There's nothing wrong with playing all my cards. The question is whether the age thing is actually a card.

Congrats! Out of curiosity, can you get them to switch your hometown to Davis? It would feel funny if it was anything but the Enterprise calling you "home-grown." Not that the Enterprise would bother reporting that, I'm sure tons of kids from there do well academically.

So is that GPA just from the first semester at Clark, then? In any case, congrats and good luck keeping it that high.

Gawd no, I am not giving Clark yet another place to send my crap. They're already bugging Jeffrey in Dublin, Grandma and Grandpa in Penngrove, me here, and Mom at two different KC addresses.

Yeah, that GPA is just from the first semester. We'll see how long I can keep it up. :)

Wait, how would they send you crap if you told them your hometown was Davis? You don't even have an address there. No offense to Santa Rosa or Cotati, but if they're gonna notify a paper, it ought to be the right one, don't you think?

Heh. I really don't care what newspapers they notify, and Grandma and Grandpa would be delighted to see my name in the Press Democrat or something. I doubt anyone in Davis would notice.
