Okay, the Beatles shouldn't be played that loudly anytime after the '70s, especially in a college dorm, but 9:30 in the morning the first day back from spring break is a little fucking harsh.

I refuse to tag this "music." That was a sadistic alarm, not music.

What song?

"Eleanor Rigby" was the one that woke me up, although various other Beatles songs continued to play and were still playing when I came back to my room around eleven.

While i don't question that the timing was very poor (i don't think i ever want to start my day to Eleanor Rigby, not to mention loudly, and too early), i humbly disagree with the idea that the Beatles should never be played loudly. Sometimes, its good to fill a room with the Beatles, even in this century.

It's elevator music to me--not bad, but blasting it doesn't feel right.

It used to be elevator music to me - until i actually listened more and started following musical heritage of modern bands. The thing is, The Beatles were good - talented, creative, productive, and well-executed. Not every one's preference, perhaps, but still quite respectable music.

It could be another case of Treasure Island syndrome. (If you read Treasure Island today it seems so trite and paltry. But this is merely because it is impossible for a modern audience not to see it through the eyes of the hundreds of derivatives thereof.)

Oh, I'm not saying they're not good. I like them in low-key situations, and I know they paved the way for a lot of music I love. They're just not blastable for me.

We will agree to disagree. It is all down to taste at that point.

You wrote about the Beatles: "It's elevator music to me--not bad, but blasting it doesn't feel right."

Sweetie, I never quite get used to your ability to flabbergast with a single, declarative sentence.

Well, obviously that's not everyone's concept of the Beatles, and that's fine. People can blast "A Little Night Music" if they want--just use headphones, that's all I ask.

(Oh oh oh, concessions will be made for "Yellow Submarine." I used to holler that one when I was four. :P)

This post made me smile this morning.

I loved the couple years spent in a college dorm (1982-84). I love that you just reminded me of the experience.

I love that I don't have to wake up early now, to someone else's rude misuse of otherwise-good music.

It should be sacrosanct, the hours between 3AM and 11AM. Designated sleeping hours. Anyone found guilty of breaking such hours should be beaten with their own arms, or maybe a lesser punishment of epic pranking, to be done at a later point.

You're in college. Prank them swift, and hard.

I believe we do have "quiet hours," but they're not the hours that I'm quiet. I think they're 11pm-7am on weeknights. Not that people don't play loud music until three in the morning anyway, but I don't mind late-night music as much as early-morning music.
