Me: Oh man, I just know one of the comments on this post is going to say "ha ha, where's the like button?". Yep, there it is. Ugh. That joke got old about two minutes after Facebook came up with the whole liking thing.
Mike: LJ needs a "punch" button.

I just got a comment like that (for all I know, that particular comment may have been the inspiration for the exchange with Mike an this post). You'll be happy to know that I have replied to the comment thusly:

While LJ does not have a "like" button, it does have a mechanism for letting you express your agreement with the OP and even elaborate on what they've said. Interestingly, it's not much more difficult to do this than to say "Damn, LJ needs a 'Like' button."

HTH.

Yep, your post was the inspiration for this exchange, and I applaud your response heartily!

One thing I will say as a positive for the "Like" and "+1" buttons is that it gives readers a way to show their appreciation for the post without having to saying something clever themselves. When you or I are witty in a group (as we so often are), not only does it often start a volley of repartee, but in addition (or occasionally instead) we are rewarded with the laughter and/or admiring looks of our peers. That doesn't really happen online (at least not among those of use who are too articulate to just write LOL on every goddam post). FB & G+ allow some approximation of this. LJ does not, despite the fact that LJ is a much better medium for posting a nice long piece of snark that may be difficult to respond to but sure is funny.

I'm just sayin'.

I have nothing against the "like" button, for what it is. I use it on Facebook. I'm just sick of people saying it should exist in places it doesn't as if they're making a hilarious joke.

I get that. OTOH, I know Feorag, and I'm pretty sure she wasn't trying to be funny (if only because her comment wasn't the least bit snarky). She probably meant, damn, I wish there were a way to say that I enjoy this without feeling the need to come up with a response that's at least that funny so I don't look like a jerk.

Is it just me, or does anyone else hate facebook. And twitter. Especially twitter...

They are tools, and I use them as such. I don't spend much time reading my Facebook newsfeed, but the site is good for specific interactions and event invitations. And Twitter has its uses. But yeah, LJ will always be be my one true love.

I just think it's sick that everyone and their mother, including tiny one location gas stations have a facebook page, celebreties twitter while filming their talk shows, and a friend of mine didn't even get the compassion of being called when one of her good friends died. She had to read about it on facebook and twitter. People just take them waaaay too far. I mean, I know people who won't even converse if it's not on facebook. How sad is that?

If you were a page on Facebook, I'd like you.
