Hands-down best moment of being a production assistant for Jonathan Coulton on Friday: carrying one of four cakes in a procession with Jonathan, Paul, and Storm. I think Storm got part of it on video- I hope it makes it onto the DVD. I thought four cakes wasn't going to be enough for the sold-out show, but there was actually quite a bit left over.

For those of you wondering who the heck this Jonathan Coulton guy is, here's his website, and here's an article about him that appeared on the Yahoo! main page on Friday. You may have heard "Code Monkey," "Still Alive" (from Portal), or "Re: Your Brains." He posted a while back about needing PAs for this show, and [livejournal.com profile] otherwise_nyc pointed me toward it. He'd already gotten the people he needed by the time I e-mailed him, but he contacted me a few days before the show to see if I was still available. (I wasn't, but I damn well made myself available. You don't pass up something like this.)

Other highlights from the day:

-I stuck a mini-flashlight and a Leatherman in my pocket before I left, figuring they might come in handy. Sure enough, I used both of them within fifteen minutes of stepping inside the theater.
-At one point, Jonathan handed me eight twenty-dollar bills and asked me to get fives. I went to several stores before I managed to break them all, and realized after I had succeeded that the three places I'd gone to were a smoke shop, a liquor store, and a porn theater.
-Part of the concert involved Jonathan playing "Still Alive" on a version of Rock Band that hasn't come out yet, so earlier in the day, I got to hang out with one of the Harmonix people who actually created Rock Band.
-JoCo and Co. failed "Still Alive" at 99% during the show. The Harmonix dude said that that's practically impossible to do.
-When I opened a bag of yellow polypropylene rope to use for blocking off areas for the cameras, I discovered a priceless little booklet entitled, "Proper Use And Care Of Rope." The first page begins, "CAUTION! IMPORTANT ROPE KNOWLEDGE."
-The camera script included some amusing bits, including "***JIB: swivel, scan the audience (wide lens); swoop and hunt, scare people," "The next song is his 'last song' (not really though)," and "Shoot people eating cake." (When I read that last, my immediate reaction was, "Cake AND death!")
-Jonathan thanked his PAs onstage, and several clusters of friends of mine hollered when he said my name. Thanks, guys. :P

Most of what I actually spent my time doing was grunt work- taping down cables, hauling furniture around, fetching things from across the building, etc. But it was fun. I got to watch the camera guys doing their thing, and all the other behind-the-scenes activity necessary for something like this, which was fascinating. Gaff tape is now my bitch, after a lot of trial and error. My muscles certainly got a good workout. Nearly everyone I met was nice and polite and fun to be around, including Jonathan, with whom I got to chat a bit. I got free food, and got to watch the concert for free too. All in all, it was a great experience, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the DVD.

My grandpa was listening to jazz in his room with the door open a little while ago, and a particularly loud frog outside started croaking in time with the beat. About eight or nine bars straight, perfect rhythm.

That may be the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had.

The nails variety, that is. Perv.

Richard Cheese's lounge version of "Closer" (YouSendIt file)
The Beatles and Nine Inch Nails mashup: "Come Closer Together" (YouTube video)
Kermit the Frog gets his angst on with "Hurt" (YouTube video)
And of course, in the spirit of the season: Nine Inch Noels

Enjoy!

ETA: None of that is worksafe, three of them because of naughty language and the Kermit one for many visual reasons.

I got myself Netflix yesterday (as a reward for getting a job offer; more on that Monday), and today I discovered that it lets me watch movies instantly on my computer. I'm very pleased about that. I watched "Orange County," which I wanted to see when it came out in theaters but wasn't allowed to because it had Jack Black in it and I was eleven. Cake's "Shadow Stabbing" played during the opening scenes, causing me to do a bit of a double-take, as I'm used to hearing that song at the beginning of a different movie.

Netflix predicted later that, based on my other ratings, I'm likely to give "Wordplay" 4.7 out of 5. Good to know the system works!

EDIT: Here's the code thingie if you want to be Netflix friends with me: http://www.netflix.com/BeMyFriend/PitrH8ia6TxrUso1Xy3E

A video of Murdoch was chosen as YouTube's Pick of the Day.

I can't believe I know that guy. (That's him on the right in my icon.)

1. Last night, Sifu taught us a new knife drill. Usually, when we learn a new move, we all start off muddling through it and he comes through and tells each of us what we're doing wrong. This time, though, I did it once, and he said, "You know, Julia, I gotta come up with a nickname for you. Blade II, maybe, or Razor."

2. Mom got me this at the Asian market. Check out the first ingredient. (It took me forever to get a non-blurry photo, by the way.) The stuff doesn't taste half bad, either.

3. School is closed today due to snow. I kind of wish it wasn't, because I missed so much last week due to sickness, but hey- extra time to work on applications and stuff.

4. And, speaking of which: my Common Application and the Harvard supplement are in! Man, that short answer took forever to get right. The Sarah Lawrence and Reed applications are due on March 1, Bard is March 15, and Brandeis is April 1. Oh, and my FAFSA is in, too. Go, me.

5. Lincoln's CD, "For The Kids," is really good. It includes covers of "Mahna Mahna" by Cake, "La La La La Lemon" by Barenaked Ladies, and "The Rainbow Connection" by Sarah McLachlan.

Yesterday in speech class, my teacher conducted a mock Jeopardy! game as review for the test on Wednesday. We played for bonus points on the test. I volunteered to work the Smart Board, so I got the same number of bonus points as everyone in the winning team. I did know the answer to the Final Jeopardy question, so I'm feeling good about the test.

I had a bit of a gender-related "oh shit" moment later, but was fortunately rescued by a sympathetic girl who had been in my situation and stocked her purse, so I didn't have to skip karate. Huzzah for Good Samaritans. On the way to the bus stop after class, I called [livejournal.com profile] prodigal7512, who swung by to rescue me from an early bedtime. We watched some of the fourth season of Scrubs, then I went home around one AM and slept until 3:40 this afternoon.

Today I have done nothing besides eat and sit in front of the computer. I uploaded the Flaming Lips' version of "What A Wonderful World" for [livejournal.com profile] lordkarel if anyone else wants it. It cuts off, though.

Cordell is in St. Louis, jumping onto the road-trip bandwagon with the rest of the family. It's just me and our humble breadwinner here at the house now. I wish I could've gone too, and visited [livejournal.com profile] thebitchingpost, whom I haven't seen since I met him in May, but school and work obligations sadly prevented me from doing so.

I just made... something. It might be soup, and it might be chili, and it might be stew, and it might be a very goopy stir-fry, and it might be some sort of bean dip. It's edible, whatever it is, and rather tasty.

It was Kat's first real concert, and the opening band was The Like (dumb name, good band, kinda reminded me of Sleater-Kinney for a couple songs), and Muse was fantastic, and the lead singer is so pretty, and his voice makes me writhe in happiness, and I was the only chick moshing, and this dude who was crowdsurfing fell on my head, and it hurt a lot, and I got all the way up to the barrier at the front, and they threw down these huge balloons with confetti inside, and I was so sticky with sweat that a piece of confetti stuck to my cheek for about three minutes, and my hands were trapped in between people so I couldn't pull it off, and they pulled out a piano for "Apocalypse Please," and I emerged from the concert absolutely soaking wet with sweat all over, and the band didn't come out afterward, but that's okay because I had a great time anyway.

I think the thing I like most about concerts is the complete lack of personal space. I'm a physical person, and while I'm better at respecting boundaries than I used to be, it's awfully nice to throw it all out for a few hours and just crush against the bodies. There's a lot of the whole "go with the flow" thing there, too; I love the feeling I get when the crowd is moving back and forth all together. Sometimes I'm part of the group pushing and I feel the power of the whole crowd going with me, and sometimes I'm being pushed and there's nothing I can do about it except let go and allow myself to move. I love it.

I was IMing Karel ([livejournal.com profile] lord_karel, as of two minutes ago) about concerts and realized that I've been to quite a few of them, considering my age: They Might Be Giants, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (though I didn't actually get to stay for the headliners), Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, Ben Folds, MSI, and Harry and the Potters twice. Damn, does my life rock. Most of them were cheap, too, or at least I didn't have to pay for them.

This weekend was going to be my weekend of getting things done. It ended up being my weekend of socializing extensively. Jasmine, Sharai, Kat and I went to Westport yesterday. Kat and I ended up in one of the booths at the art fair for a total of about an hour. I'm not normally an art person, and it's difficult for me to find a painting I can stare at for a long time without getting bored, but these were truly amazing. The guy only does the one fair each year, and he doesn't have a website, which kind of sucks. I'm glad I found him at all, though.

Jasmine spent the night and we went to church this morning. We played the Pictionary-type game I learned at Chainsaw's party. Ann and Colin were there, and the four of us went to Jerusalem Cafe for lunch, then picked up Sharai and hung out at my house until Walk As One. (Hot tubs are fun in the rain.) I didn't actually go on the walk, because of miscommunications regarding where Kat was going to meet me, but I got to see Emily and Terrance and Ashley and Manal and Mikhala and Deth (Deth is running for city council!). Calvin was supposed to be there, but he didn't show. And there were oranges. Overall, it was a success. Except that Theis Park is not wheelchair-accessible, so things kinda sucked for Colin.

Ann had to go home, but the rest of us (Jasmine, Sharai, Kat, and me, plus Dan, whom we picked up at some point) went to my house and hung out until around nine. My entire family plus Spencer, Denis, and Christian were already here, so the place was pretty crowded for a while. I burned a bunch of copies of a Hellogoodbye album, because we listened to a song from it in Ann's car and everyone fell in love, and I burned Sharai a Muse mix. There was food. I showed off my gymnastic skills (whee, I can lean back into a backbend), taught Kat a couple of techniques I learned in karate class, and nearly fell asleep on Dan in the car on the way back from dropping off Jasmine.

Now everyone is gone, and I'm eyeing my "to do over the weekend" list with some trepidation. There are consequences to be paid for partying.

Concerts

Sep. 8th, 2006 09:08 pm
jedusor: (the first mary sue)
The Strokes (Oct. 1 at Memorial Hall): $30
Muse (Oct. 25 at the Uptown): $32
Kasabian (Oct. 3 in Lawrence): $37
Nickelback and Hoobastank (Sept. 16 at Kemper Arena): $150

I feel like there should be a "priceless" at the end of that list, but that would really only make sense if I'd bought the above tickets, and I haven't... though I'm really, really tempted to spring for Muse. I can't do the Strokes because I'll be in California, and I can't do Kasabian because it's the day after I get back and it's in Lawrence, and the Nickelback tickets are too expensive to seriously consider. But I really love all the Muse I've heard, and [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess said they start off their show with "Apocalypse Please," which I think might be worth thirty bucks all on its own. Would anyone be interested in going with me?

EDIT: Apparently the date for the Muse concert was wrong- it's actually September 15 (next Friday) and I don't get paid until next Friday, so it doesn't look like I'll be able to go. Plus, available tickets are more like sixty bucks than thirty. *sigh*

I have the Hikaru No Go soundtrack! With the theme song that I memorized when I was, like, eleven! Heeeeeee! My sixteenth birthday just keeps getting better and better the older I get!

(Also, Cordell is back from his summer in Japan/California. But, you know, details.)

Now I have to rewatch the entire series. I'm considering joining Sanae's new beginning Japanese group, too, so I can read the Spiral manga Cord brought back with him. We'll see how long I can keep it up without falling behind in my classes. My GPA has to come before manga, I'm afraid.

Yesterday was Rain's party, which was awesome. Bailey, whom I hadn't seen in years, was visiting from California. Ann came, and gave Colin a lift, which made me very happy, because I haven't hung out with Colin in person since Anytown in June. Karel and Kyle came, but had to leave after a few hours. The rest of us spent the night and went to church this morning. Colin liked All Souls, and says he wants to start coming regularly, and Ann said he can ride with her. Yay!

At church, we watched Word Wars, made by (NPL member) Murdoch's brother E-Wolf, also known as Eric Chaikin. The movie is about hardcore Scrabble. I saw it at the Boston con, I think- there was a Q&A with E-Wolf afterward. It was just as good the second time, and just as suspenseful because I'd forgotten who won.

Speaking of Murdoch (aka Kid Beyond, aka Andrew Chaikin), I'm in love with his new CD, Amplivate. The first four tracks are completely vocal, but it's hard to believe that they are. Murdoch can do some phenomenal things with his voice. There are videos on his site; I highly recommend checking them out, and buying the CD if you like what you hear. (That's him on the right in my icon.)

Maybe I'm just being overly picky, but on LJ's main page, it says "Baaaaah", says Frank. It kind of irks me.

I got up at 6:30 yesterday in order to be at the TLC when it opened at 8, just in case I was supposed to be there then. Good thing I did, too, because I was in fact scheduled to work at 8. Not only that, but I'm scheduled to work at 8 Monday through Friday all semester. Joy. At least they didn't schedule me for Saturdays. I spent most of the morning handing out coupons for free cafeteria stuff and helping new students figure out how to get to their classes.

I have Ms. Scott for political science, and she was very familiar with me, pretty much establishing me as teacher's pet. We'll see how long that lasts. Hopefully, she won't be too pissed at me by the end of class to give me a good recommendation letter. Sharai is in that class with me, which I suspect will save my ass multiple times this semester.

Sociology (Sex Roles and Sexuality) is interesting. The teacher didn't lecture, but had us all sit in a circle and introduce ourselves in great depth. She said that we'll be covering personal stuff during the class, so we need to be comfortable with each other. There were some boring people and some very interesting ones. One girl said perkily, "I'm eighteen, I have a sugar daddy boyfriend who's ten years older than me, and I'm taking this class because I like to have sex!" There's someone I know through All Souls in the class, too.

Someone needs notes taken for them, so I went down to ABLE/Access and signed up as a note-taker. As long as my handwriting is legible for the first three weeks and he doesn't drop out before midterms, I get fifty bucks at the end of the semester... which is pretty sweet for doing something I do already.

I played the "my love is like a storybook story" song from the credits of Princess Bride on my bass last night for about half an hour straight. I'd almost forgotten how incredibly therapeutic playing music is for me. I guess I got so frustrated with the Suzuki crap that I sort of gave up on the violin. I really hate the Suzuki method. It places a lot of emphasis on perfection- I remember my teacher making me play the same measure about fifty times in a row just because I'd settled into the habit of playing the open A string instead of the fourth finger on the D string. It didn't exactly spoil the violin for me forever, and I still play sometimes, but I always feel self-conscious. Milo just feels more peaceful. Besides, it's harder to play a sharp or flat note on a bass. And I love that "storybook story" song.
jedusor: (oh noes)
Yesterday (that is, Tuesday):
-Sharai and I met with Zola about the banned books club (now dubbed "Novel Challenge"), and we've got a good plan.
-We went to Costco with Mom, and Sharai finally bought me my birthday foamy soap. Yay, foamy soap!
-Mom and I went to Korma Sutra, a great Indian restaurant, to celebrate my grant. It was delicious, though my leftovers seem to have mysteriously disappeared. I'm kind of sad. I wanted those.
-We went to an empty parking lot down by Target, and I learned how to drive. It was a little scary and very fun. Mom didn't freak out quite as much as I expected her to, except when I hit the brake too hard. And we only had one run-in with a police officer. Now I need to get my permit at some point.
-I discovered that none of the schools I want to visit in Boston offer tours or information sessions on Saturdays or Sundays. Which kind of sucks, as I was planning to spend this weekend there. I guess I should have planned further ahead. Anyone have any ideas as to what I should do? I'll call Aunt Amanda about it tomorrow.

Today:
-I got a bass amp. We were going to get a used one, but this one was less than a hundred dollars new, and I like it a lot. I can actually hear Milo clearly without plucking the strings really hard, which makes me very happy.
-I watched the rest of "About A Boy." It was kind of ehh. Not bad, but I wouldn't watch it again. I thought the kid was a pretty crappy actor, Hugh Grant wasn't at his best either, and there was some really morally misleading stuff about conformity that I didn't like. But it was cute.
-Sharai came over, then Ethan and Laura came over, then we all took the bus to an Italian restaurant to meet Jonhenry for dinner, then Josie picked us up and took everyone home. I fell over rough-housing with Ethan on the bus and now I have a mondo-bruise at the top of my right thigh. Owch.
-I talked to Jasmine on the phone. Sounds like we definitely need to put together an Anytown field trip to Passages: me, her, Rain, Calvin, Colin, and Terrance. And now I have the Anytown song in my head again.
-Laura called me in tears, saying that she'd broken up with her boyfriend. It wasn't exactly a surprise (it had been coming for a long time), but it still sucked for her, and I stayed on the phone with her until she'd calmed down a little.

Tomorrow I have a tutor training thing at UMKC (50 bucks for 4.5 hours, which is a hell of a lot more than they pay me for actual work). Friday morning is a Student Activities meeting. I'm going straight from the meeting to the airport- Clay is coming back about three hours before I leave.

A good day

The Harry and the Potters concert was way better than last time, even though it had to be moved from Theis Park to the downtown library, inconveniencing pretty much everyone. Thanks, Mia, for the lift. I ran into Beep and Ethan at the concert, and we spent the majority of it bouncing around. I started a mosh pit twice, but we never got more than four people because Pottergeeks are apparently all wusses. Draco and the Malfoys, despite looking nothing like Draco Malfoy, were fabulous. "My Dad Is Rich, Your Dad Is Dead," in particular, cracked me up.

Guess who just called me? TERRANCE! The absolutely adorable gay guy from Anytown! (Well, that description actually fits four people, but anyway.) Terrance and I had a total blast at Anytown, waltzing and tangoing and dirty dancing and running around and holding hands and talking about guys and singing at the tops of our lungs and saving each other from running the hill and whispering too much during closing circle. Then I didn't hear peep from him after Anytown, and had pretty much given up on him when he called me at quarter past midnight today, saying apologetically, "I lost the sheet with all the contact info from people, and I just noticed that there was a phone number in your note." We talked for about half an hour, and it felt like Anytown ended yesterday. I am so happy.

Afterglow

Last night, I listened to this song on repeat as I fell asleep. It's one of those songs with so many layers that I can listen to it over and over for hours without getting tired of it. It's about coping after losing someone close to you, but I didn't realize that until after I'd fallen in love with it. It makes me think about Evan and Larry, and how they've made an impact on my life. It makes me think about how much I've changed in the last year, in the last month, in the last hour. It makes me think about how lucky I am.

I'm not a music critic. I don't know much about riffs and influences and sounds, the things music geeks talk about when recommending music. All I know is what I like and what I don't like, and I like this.

It kind of makes me uncomfortable when other people fall in love with music, and send it to me, and really want me to like it, and I find it mediocre or bad. So it's okay if you don't like this song. Not everyone has the same musical tastes. But it really affected me, and I wanted to share it. I hope you enjoy it too.

"Afterglow" by INXS

I totally didn't connect the song "Here Comes a Special Boy" with Phillipe from "Achewood." D'oh. Does anyone know how Freezepop is connected to the comic? My stepdad thinks Liz Enthusiasm is married to the strip artist, but a quick Google search does not confirm or deny this.
jedusor: (capslock harry)
Your SAT scores can tell admission officers how you compare with other students who took the test. All scores are reported on the 200-to-800 scale. For example, if your scores are about 500 on each section, which is the mean (average) score, college admission staff would know you scored about as well as half of the students who took the test.

My SAT II scores: History, 540; Biology, 560; Literature, 690. So I did better than average in all three, and significantly better than average in Literature. EDIT: Because this is confusing a lot of people, a clarification- these are my SAT II scores, the ones I took back in January, not the ones I'm waiting on.

Where did I get "Wish I Had An Angel" by Nightwish? For that matter, who sent me all these INXS songs? I want to know who to thank- I'm really liking them. (Here's the Nightwish one.)

Oh, and I'm not going to WisCon or, probably, NPL con, because my dad is a fuckshit and my grandma is in the hospital. (These are unrelated events.) *sigh* Now all I need is a rejection letter from Reed and a grand piano to fall on my leg, and my life will be perfect.
jedusor: (is elijah blue?)
I love this music video. I love everything about it. I love the music. I love the lyrics. I love the PostSecrets. I love that the money they paid to use the secrets was donated to a suicide hotline. I love the lead singer's eyes. I love the bag over the one guy's head. This video just all-around rocks my world.
jedusor: (emo grass)
Yeah, I just got a diamond on Hard singing "Dust In The Wind," but using only the word "cheese." (The thing recognizes the notes, not the words, so it doesn't matter what you sing as long as you get the pitch right.) I'm pretty proud of myself.

Link and I are all alone tonight. After watching the Mahna Mahna video about twenty-nine times, he is now asleep.

[Poll #706318]

And GIP. Yes, again. Yes, making fun of emo kids, again. Kyle said it the other day, and it was too funny not to iconize.
