[livejournal.com profile] xthread posted these .mp3s, along with a description of what they are. I am extremely curious as to how many of you can hear them. Both are direct downloads, not links.

The first sound.
The second sound.

[Poll #740436]

[livejournal.com profile] xthread's post is here.

EDIT: Eight people have responded so far. The answers are of very mixed ages for the first sound, but almost perfectly divided age-wise as predicted for the second (apart from one teenager that can't hear it). Fascinating.

EDIT RELOADED: Now the teen who couldn't hear the second one changed her answer. And another teen can hear it, and two more adults can't.

That HURTS.

I want to put them on Adrian and get random people to listen to them, now...

I felt the second one before I heard it. I put it on and felt something in my lower inner ears and turned the volume up a bit and there was the sound itself.

Actually, both of them hurt, but the second one hurts more.

It's just noise, a high sound.

My computer itself is a little noisy, but I still couldn't hear anything. I checked just now to make sure my sound is working, and it is.

Ow==both. I have interesting hearing... I have super-excellent hearing, but I fail at comprehending what is said or placing an action with a sound. My brain is weird.

The first one just sounded like a crowded room, while I thought I might have heard something for the second but I couldn't say for sure. Thanks for pointing out my old fartitude! ;{)}

Wow. This is the most fascinating thing the Internet has had to offer in quite some time.

I couldn't hear the first one (mosquito_sound) the first time -- could only hear the crowded room. When I read the comments and was sufficiently convinced that yes, there was something else to be heard, I cranked the speakers up, leaned in close, and tried again, and this time I could hear it, very faintly -- to me, a very soft, very high-pitched warble. I would never have noticed it if my attention weren't completely focused on it.

The second one (highfreq) I could hear quite clearly. Not loud, but quite clear.

Neither one hurt, at all.

I'm 37, and I think of myself as having good hearing.

Now I need to test it on my children and on my slightly-deaf husband. Wheee!

i've known for a while that my hearing is not what it used to be, especially my left ear (gotta get this checked someday...).

i do sense a whine in a house when i've been outdoors and away from electricity for a while.

No and no, at least at normal volume levels. I'm 37.

Oddly, the first track played in my browser, but the second downloaded and played in iTunes. Don't know what's up with that.

im trying to think of hte best way to put this..
ah, here we go...
OW ow ow Ow ow ow. OW OW ow Ow OW.

something like that.
could hear both sounds, both hurt, the second one just about made me fly across the room. fascinating ideas behind it though, i may have to look into the ringtone idea...of course, then it'd be pure pain to my nice singer's ears whenever anyone tried to contact me...

I hear them both when the speakers are turned up, and I also pick them up when the speakers are almost turned down to the off setting.

They don't hurt, but I can both hear them and feel them in my ears.

I had to listen to this. I'm 26, and can hear both, though the 2nd would be mistakeable for tinnitus, if I didn't know I was listening for it.
The funny part is after 8 years in the navy, the major bands of sound, mainly the low speech bands, are much harder to hear for me, and I have very weak hearing, overall.
Is this unusual?
