A realization

I've been sitting here trying to put this into words for ten minutes, and it's simply not working.

I need to acknowledge that not everyone shares my interests. When I find something that I think is incredibly interesting or vitally important, and other people don't share that fascination, I can't let that stop me from charging forward and doing it or learning about it or making it happen. The apathy of others is a reason to get more fired up, not a reason to give up because I'm the only one who cares.

I think that's almost what I'm trying to say.

Subtle distinction: "can't" in the sense of "shouldn't", or "can't" in the sense of "don't"?

I'm not sure which you mean, and obviously it changes the nuance of the sentence...

But yeah: my current on-the-bus reading material is Asimov's Guide To Science Part I. If I went with merely what other *people* were interested in, I wouldn't get to end up sitting there giggling at something absolutely beautiful I'd come across, or smiling in fond regard and a degree of empathy for the scientists who've made huge discoveries etc.

I mean that, at the moment, when I squee about things I'm excited about (such as setting the processes in motion to provide free condoms to students at my school) and people whose opinions I respect are lukewarm or simply don't give a shit, it makes me doubt whether I myself should be excited. I need to quit questioning myself because of other people.

That still doesn't sound right, though. I had this huge epiphany, but it's hard to articulate. :/

Make up words where you're stuck. Or come up with crazy metaphors. Like necrophilia and ducks, for example. Don't know where that can lead, but if you're pretty imaginative and/or creative, you'll be able to explain things perfectly.

Of course, the folks you're talking to may not understand you. That's where true friends come in; they're the ones that DO understand you, and translates to other folks. And if they still don't understand, fuck 'em. But not literally. That could get pretty awkward. That is to say, "they bes' be steppin' out yo' grill fo' they's get clocked." ("Tell them to leave before they get punched.")
