My own writeup will be posted soon. In the meantime, here are some others:

First of all, especially if you weren't happy with the Hunt, you should read our leader's writeup. It might put things in perspective a little. This Hunt nearly did not happen, and I for one am astounded that it went as well as it did.

Members of Palindrome: Trip, Jeffurry, Squonk, /dev/joe (part 1 and part 2), dalryaug, Tinhorn, Debby, Hathor.

Members of the winning team: Thomas, Jenn, Spelvin, Tablesaw.

Solvers from other teams: someone from GroovyTron, Tahnan and 530nm330hz and Sax from II&F, someone from (I think) Death From Above, Wes (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5).

Newspaper articles: The Tech and Wicked Local.

Pictures: A confession from Just For The Halibut, Ennirol's Flickr photoset of the Bombers, Kat's photoset (if you only look at one of those, make it the one of Trip at the wrap-up in his Subservient Chicken head), Tinhorn's photoset, Debby's photoset.

And 530nm330hz's crossword hat deserves a paragraph of its own. I didn't get to see it in person, much to my chagrin, but it's utterly awesome, and its owner should keep a close eye on it if it ever enters my presence.

I'll update this list as I find more links. [livejournal.com profile] mystery_hunt may also provide further Huntish posts to peruse.

I finally got around to downloading Across Lite. (Yes, I've been doing crosswords solely on paper and in crappy internet applets for a year and a half now.) So where can I find puzzles online? I downloaded some from Triple Play Puzzles, [livejournal.com profile] qaqaq's project, but I'll need more soon. On the easier side is best- I may be an NPLer, but I'm not a very good one.

I discovered a couple of weeks ago that [livejournal.com profile] jelliclekat, who claimed to like dark chocolate, was referring to Hershey's and had never tried Real Chocolate. So I sent her a sampler of nine types of dark chocolate from my private stash, and I just got this in an e-mail (posted with permission): So far I have devoured the Chocolove ginger, Mon Cherri, Eclipse, hazelnut, Rapunzel hazelnut, Hachez Chocolatier, and mint leaves. (Who needs moderation where chocolate is concerned?) This stuff is amazing, holy shit. I can never eat Hershey's again. 87% cacao is delicious. *happy squirm*

By the way, I'm not sending out Christmas cards this year. I figure last year's were awesome enough to last me two years at least. I'll try to think of something else fun and original next year.

...is open!

Here is the registration page, which should have all the information you need. Room reservation information and FAQ is here. If you're interested in participating in the Hunt but don't have a team, go here. If you have any questions, send them to puzzle@mit.edu.

I can't wait to see you all in January!

Anyone have a Mystery Hunt team that could use another member? My stepdad, Bill (Fork to you NPLers) is interested in doing it, but he obviously can't join my team, as we're constructing this year. He's never done a Mystery Hunt before, but he's sharp, and would be a good asset to a Hunt team. Please let me know if you're on a non-Palindrome team that might be interested.

Recap with pictures )

Now I'm back in Penngrove, and officially starting my Pier 1 job in an hour and fifteen minutes...
jedusor: (i have a cat)
Not really a spoiler for today's NYT, but I'll cut it anyway. )

EDIT: Apparently, the KC Star runs the puzzles a few weeks behind the NYT, and this one is actually the March 20th puzzle.

Yesterday, we went to Golden Gate Park. That was the plan, anyway. I ended up spending so much time sifting through all the shiny shops on Haight Street that I had to head back to BART before we reached the park.

San Francisco again. )

I BARTed to see [livejournal.com profile] rebbyribs, and then we went to the Equinox puzzle party.

Luck o' the Iris. )

I got about five hours of sleep, then hopped on a plane home. I slept for most of the trip. I'm glad I'm not one of those people who can't sleep on planes.

The trip home. )

I'm now back in Kansas City, and going back to school and work tomorrow. This trip was utterly fabulous in pretty much every way. Thank you so much to everyone who took some time to hang out with me; it was really awesome to see you all!

If you want to listen to the This American Life episode about the Mystery Hunt (in which the voices of several people I know appear, but mine does not), the podcast is available here. The segment on the Mystery Hunt begins about 30 minutes in and ends around minute 45.

My favorite quote: "My mentor came to me and said, 'Dave, we have to talk.' He said, 'Uh, Dave? Um, you’re using too many literary allusions in your casual speech, and people are complaining.'”

Also, [livejournal.com profile] dalryaug posted links to some of the bad Wordplay sequels (thanks, Nathan!):

Colon Inflating Rhinoceri: the cat one, agreed by most to be the best.
Setec Astronomy: meet the Tyler Hinman of the word search world.
Left Out: sort of the same idea as ours, but ours was better.
ACME: The Making of a Champion.

I really wish we'd filmed ours. :/

The two-time crossword puzzle champion of the United States is thoroughly unable to operate a can opener.

There are no words to adequately express my amusement at this.

This entry is going to be long. Really, really long. Ridiculously long. You have been warned.

My favorite quotes from the weekend )

I'm insanely excited for next year. Artistry came up with a puzzle idea that I really really want to do (I think Cramerica's going to do it with me) and I have a couple of other vague concepts I might try to write. Whatever happens, with this team behind it, it's gonna rock.

My team won. It was one of the best vacations of my life. I have no idea how we're going to measure up to this standard next year.

I'll write up my notes from the weekend in a Post-Zilla sometime in the next few days. Right now, though, I have to sleep. I need to be at work in seven hours, meaning I get up in five, then I have my first day of classes. Deep breath, Julia.

I think it's really funny that I just Googled "prince valiant's son," clicked on one of the first results, and found a mention of [livejournal.com profile] tahnan and a comment from [livejournal.com profile] qaqaq on that page.

I really need to control this crossword puzzle thing. It's getting out of hand. I've been doing it for hours every day since Wednesday or so, and I'm enjoying myself immensely, but I really should be doing other things.

[livejournal.com profile] hannahrorlove and I are writing a screenplay for NaNoWriMo. I don't know if it will be 50k words, but the energy in the writing community during November should help us move forward. It stemmed from a discussion of homosexuality in the media, during which Hannah said she'd like to see a burly, bisexual biker guy as a character in a movie. So we created the character, and his boyfriend, and a few more characters, and a vague idea of a plotline. The working title is "Catching Summer," and I'm sure I'll be writing more about it here.

No Rain this weekend, which made me sad, but Ethan spent the night. We went to Domo because he'd never had sushi, and I taught him to juggle. Also, he had the shit scared out of him by a vacuum cleaner, which was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.

I need to figure out how the heck I'm going to eat tomorrow, because my time is scheduled too tightly to walk anywhere to get food. I wish the PV cafeteria was open in the late afternoon.
jedusor: (nice kitty?)
Someone posted the Anagrammies to the National Puzzlers' League list a while ago, and I was reading it to kill time between classes when I came across this gem by Meyran Kraus, and absolutely had to share it.

This...

Little Bo-Peep has lost her sheep,
And can't tell where to find them;
Leave them alone, and they'll come home,
And bring their tails behind them.

Little Bo-Peep fell fast asleep,
And dreamt she heard them bleating;
But when she awoke, she found it a joke,
For still they all were fleeting.

Then up she took her little crook,
Determined for to find them;
She, found them indeed, but it made her heart bleed,
For they'd left all their tails behind 'em!

It happened one day, as Bo-Peep did stray
Unto a meadow hard by --
There she espied their tails, side by side,
All hung on a tree to dry.

She heaved a sigh and wiped her eye,
And over the hillocks she raced;
And tried what she could, as a shepherdess should,
That each tail should be properly placed.

...anagrams into this:

(Detective Halsted frowns.)

Det. Halsted: That's all?
Bo-Peep: Yeah.
Det. Halsted: Mind telling me the reason for the rhymes and the third-person narrative?
Bo-Peep: It's just the way I was brought up. Are we done here?
Det. Halsted: What's the hurry, Folk Fan? There's time for another poem.
Bo-Peep: Ah... Ever hear this one? 'Hey Diddle Diddle-'
Det. Halsted: Diddle with this, Hot Cheeks: the herd has been found slain and de-tailed. And hence, the Shepherd Hill Maniac... is here, in front of me.
Bo-Peep (feebly): No, that's a lie.
Det. Halsted: The game is up! Come clean! Don't you hear the lambs scream? They'll be louder... and louder...
Bo-Peep (sobbing): Alright! I killed them... I killed them all.
Det. Halsted (to an officer): Take her away.
Bo-Peep: I'll see you in hell, Halsted.
